We’re Tej (Kathryn and Libby).
In May 2011, we visited the lovely district of Flaminio in northern Rome to look at the gap between the Global and Local. We’ll assume you don’t know loads about Flaminio (but if you do, sorry - you’ll have to skim…)
Flaminio is home to the internationally famous MAXXI gallery by Zaha Hadid, the Olympic Stadiums and the Parco Della Musica by Renzo Piano; yet it’s also a really quiet neighbourhood with many local businesses and homes.
The area is hugely popular with global tourists, yet they very rarely stray from the iconic sites ignoring the local scale aspects. Plus local residents have no relationship to the global institutions. Therefore we wanted to bridge this gap and connect people to the real Flaminio.
10 cameras were given to 10 locals with the request to document their life in Flaminio resulting in a collection of local artwork. With these photographs, we introduced the community’s artwork (sneakily) into the world famous MAXXI modern art gallery alongside internationally renowned artists and designers - putting the local art and global art side by side. This was followed by creating an art gallery in the streets: pasting the photos onto the trees of the tourist heavy areas, we introduced visitors to the people and places of Flaminio.
We have already made a short film about the intervention (with a little help from a wonderful camera man named Tom) and the final stage of the project is to make a book to send to and thank all the participants. It will show the beautiful photographs the locals took, promoting the project and showing that we staged a pretty sweet intervention.
We are wanting to produce 300 16-page A3 books to show the project. The requested money would cover the costs of printing, making and sending the books. Also, for the event to launch the book and screen the film in both Manchester and Flaminio.
Take a look here: http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/investment/1-flaminio-355 to buy a book and be involved in the project.
